Why is Communion so important for Christians?

When we face spiritual drift or forget the depth of our faith, communion pulls us back to center. It’s not just a church tradition or a small piece of bread with juice. It’s a reminder. It’s a reset. It’s one of the earliest practices given to followers of Jesus, and it still matters today. Somewhere along the way, we began treating communion like a routine instead of a moment of transformation. But if we pause and look again, we’ll see it for what it truly is: a moment of renewal and realignment.

Invite the Holy Spirit to Shape Your Heart

Communion begins in the heart. It’s not just about taking the bread and the cup. It’s about inviting the Holy Spirit to search you, shape your attitudes, and realign your desires with God’s will. That shaping happens through prayer and reflection. Before you take communion, stop and ask: Where is my heart today? Am I walking in love, humility, and grace? Or have I drifted into pride, bitterness, or distraction?

This isn’t about guilt. It’s about grace.

Keep the Gospel in Front of You

Communion is all about remembering what Jesus did. The life, death, and resurrection of Christ are the heart of the gospel. And Jesus gave us this practice because He knew how easy it is to forget.

“God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…” (John 3:16) When we take communion, we are reminded not just of Jesus’ sacrifice, but also of the hope that came from the resurrection. It’s both somber and joyful. Honest and hopeful.

    What Church History Teaches Us

Communion is one of the oldest practices in the Christian faith. The only practice older is baptism. In the early church, believers gathered around the bread and the cup often. But over time, especially after the Protestant Reformation, many churches distanced themselves from anything that looked too Catholic. As a result, some churches only celebrated communion once a year. Others stopped altogether. And something vital was lost. Communion is not a Catholic tradition. It’s a Jesus tradition.

Paul had to remind the early believers in Corinth of this as well. Some were treating communion like a free meal, arriving hungry, eating all the bread, and forgetting the reason they had gathered. Paul corrected them gently and firmly. He reminded them, 'This is not about feeding your stomach.' It’s about feeding your soul.

    Examine Your Heart First

Before participating in communion, Paul urges believers to examine themselves. That means pausing long enough to ask, Is my heart clear before God?

    You can ask:

    • Is there anything I need to confess?
    • Am I carrying resentment or selfishness?
    • Am I walking in humility and love?

This moment of examination isn’t for condemnation. It’s for clarity. You simply ask God to show you what needs to be surrendered, and then you receive His grace with open hands.

The Bread and the Cup Are Simple but Sacred

Paul wrote, “The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’” (1 Corinthians 11:23-24) It’s not about the size of the bread or the type of juice. It’s about the meaning behind it. The bread represents Jesus’ body, broken for us. The cup represents His blood, poured out for our forgiveness.

Take a moment. Close your eyes. Thank Jesus for what He has done. And if there’s anything you need to surrender, give it to Him now. That’s where healing begins.

    Why This Still Matters Today

Communion is not a ritual of the past. It is a rhythm for today. When practiced with intention, it strengthens your faith, clears your heart, and centers your soul.

Here’s what communion helps you do:

    1. Humble Yourself – You recognize your need for grace.
    2. Refocus on Jesus – You remember what truly matters.
    3. Practice Unity – You join with others around one common hope.
    4. Experience Renewal – You allow the Holy Spirit to reset your heart.

You don’t need to wait for a perfect moment. Communion is for real people with real struggles who are pursuing a real Savior.
